If there are common denominators for most devices this year, then they all have multiple cameras. This isn’t just about dual cameras: OEMs like OnePlus, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and even Apple have produced phones that have triple, quad, or even pent camera settings. Most cameras are not always associated with a better camera experience, but this frees up more features and flexibility that normally cannot be drawn properly by the camera. This flexibility drives OEMs to install multiple cameras, which increases the demand for different image sensors. That is why Sony’s semiconductor division is really ready – in such a way that it doesn’t seem to keep up with the ever-increasing demand. Sony obviously can’t follow the image sensor search.

Terushi Shimizu, head of Sony’s semiconductor division, said: “Assessing the current situation, even after investing in this capacity expansion, it might still not be enough.” regarding the production capacity of their camera sensors and that “we must apologize to customers because we cannot do enough”, as reported by Bloomberg. The reason is the demand for their cameras and the number of smartphones produced in series with multiple sensor arrays. Sony is the main provider of camera sensors for most smartphone manufacturers, and most of the devices we use today have at least one sensor from Sony. Although the demand for smartphones has been marketed throughout the world, the demand for image sensors continues to increase. Sony even works around the clock to produce image sensors on demand and continually manages its chip factories during the holidays to meet demand. But 24-hour surgery is also inadequate. Demand has grown so rapidly that semiconductors have become Sony’s second most profitable business, only defeated by PlayStation.

Sony is a 48MP IMX586 sensor manufacturer, which is by far the most popular camera sensor this year. It has several devices, including several Xiaomi phones (Redmi Note 7/7 Pro, Redmi Note 8, Xiaomi Mi 9 series, Redmi K20 Pro) / Mi 9T Pro, Xiaomi Mi A3), OnePlus 7 / 7T and devices from Huawei, Oppo , Realme, Asus, Vivo, Motorola and others. Its successor, IMX686, will compete with Samsung’s 108MP hippopotamus with a resolution of 64MP and will be presented on 2020 phones such as the Redmi K30. Sony claims to have a 51% market share from May 2019, which is expected to increase by several percentage points in the following months. Source
